Welcome to the vibrant Health and Wellbeing Faculty at The Royal High School.
We are committed to empowering all young people to develop the knowledge, skills, competencies, and qualities necessary to understand the value and process of supporting their own and others’ wellbeing.
The faculty comprises two departments: Physical Education and Health & Food Technology. Both are dedicated to providing meaningful experiences for students to foster their curiosity, passion, and aspiration for wellbeing. Within the faculty, all young people have opportunities to learn within this curricular area from S1-6, inclusive of their core broad general education lessons, academy and elective options, as well as within their certificated course choices. We strive to ensure that all students have accessible development pathways to suit their interests and needs. Furthermore, the HWB Faculty delivers an extensive extra-curricular programme to support young people in continuing to explore their interests beyond the classroom.

BGE
The BGE phase refers to students’ experiences across curricular areas until they finish S3, after which they move onto their senior phase where course choices are made. Young people will often be working / progressing through the third level in S1 into S2, and the fourth level during S2 into S3 where the BGE concludes – however, all young people progress at different rate. Students exit level within the BGE help support student course choices and initial level of study into their senior phase.

BGE Physical Education
Students have two blocks of core physical education each week between S1 and S4. During S1-3 students make progression through the BGE PE benchmarks which support their development of physical fitness, physical competencies, cognitive skills, and personal qualities. A range of activities and approaches are used to support their progression in these areas. To read more about what is involved within the PE benchmarks across different levels, please see the link to The PE Benchmark Document.
RHS Swimming Strategy
We are passionate about ensure all young people develop the physical skills and knowledge to be safe in and around pools and other waterways. Consequently, in consultation with students we developed out swimming strategy that outlines our rational around the purpose of swimming in BGE PE and how we ensure all young people feel safe and able to develop these skills and knowledge in class. Please see this RHS Swimming Strategy link for more information – RHS Swimming Strategy.
BGE Home Economics
Students have one blocks of core home economics each week between S1 and S2. During this time students make progression through the health and food benchmarks which support the development of their understanding and practical skills relating to the food experience, developing health choices, nutritional needs, keeping safe & hygienic, the journey of food, and food technologies. A range of cookery, design, and other activities are used to support their progression in these areas. To read more about what is involved within the health and food benchmarks across different levels, please see the link to The Health & Food Benchmark Document.
Health & Wellbeing Across Learning
Students have one block a week of Health & Wellbeing Across Learning (HWB AL) between S1 and S2. During this time students develop their understanding of what physical/ mental/ emotional/ social health is and the importance of supporting caring for these aspects of health. Students explore factors that can impact our health, such as digital technologies and equalities, and develop skills to be resilient to and address these factors. Additionally, during HWB AL student explore their achievements across the school and how these link to ‘meta skills’ – higher order thinking skills that support learning and the application student knowledge.

Health & Nutrition
Students have one block a week of Health & Nutrition (HN) in S1. During this time students develop their understanding of how their body works and what is need to support its function, how diet impacts their health, factors that impact their food choices, and how are needs at different points throughout our lives.
Academics
S1-6 students have the opportunity to select an academy option whereby they explore a topic of interest to them from a range of options offered across the school. Within the HWB faculty we have offered the following in the past: football, rugby, multi-sport, aesthetics, dance “aquadamy”, MineCraft, refereeing, and home economics.
S3 Elective Course
In S3, student are able to make course choices ahead of the senior phase to focus on areas they may like to explore for their certificated course options. Please see the S2 course presentation link below

We aim to deliver a range of progression pathways that include courses that are suitable for students’ varying needs and interests.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities
We strive to deliver an excellent extra-curricular programme to support young people to explore their interests beyond the classroom. Below is information regarding our current offering of regular extra-curricular sports clubs. In addition to this, we run many seasonal clubs and one-off events/ competition – these are communicated with student when they arise.
