Mathematics and Numeracy

The Royal High School mathematics department supports and challenges all our learners to achieve their best, improving their confidence in their own abilities within numeracy and mathematics.  We aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to fully participate in our information driven society.

BGE

Each class in S1, S2 and S3 gets 4, 50 minute blocks of Mathematics a week. The classes are broad banded.

The Main class. Working through level 3 S1/S2 and level 4 S2/S3.

  • The Booster class. Usually smaller in size than the main class, it follows the same course outline but doesn’t always go quite so far with some topics.
  • The Nurture class. A smaller class aiming to provide more support as well as develop and nurture confidence in Mathematics and Numeracy skills.

Stand Alone Numeracy Units (Certificated)

Numeracy is a unit that is part of the National 3 Application of Mathematics, National 4 Mathematics and National 5 Applications of Mathematics qualification. It is also an internally assessed, stand-alone qualification at each level. For further information click HERE.

It is possible within a single year to achieve both

  • National 3 Applications of Mathematics with National 4 Numeracy.
  • National 4 Mathematics with National 5 Numeracy.
  • National 5 Mathematics with National 5 Numeracy.

Numeracy

Numeracy is not just the four operations ADD, SUBTRACT, MULTIPLY and DIVIDE. It encompasses a variety of topics students will use on a day-to-day basis across the curriculum and in the real world. Numeracy is everywhere, in every aspect of life.

How do we do Numeracy at The Royal High School?

There can be several correct ways to tackle a Numeracy question. This can mean that students don’t always recognise that what they are doing in one subject area is the same as in another subject area. To try and help make these connections we have created The Royal High School Numeracy booklet for students, staff and parents to show the methods we use to tackle the basics of each Numeracy topic.

Number and Number Processes

It is important that everyone is numerate, not only to pass an exam but for life beyond education. This does not mean that we must be able to work out everything mentally, we do however, need to understand what is asked of us and how to get the answer.

We can work out answers to basic calculations in 3 ways. We can perform the calculation mentally, use a paper and pencil method or we can use a calculator. Sometimes it is not straight forward to work out an answer to a calculation mentally.  While most of us will have access to a calculator on our phone sometimes we are unable to use our phone or calculator. For National 4 and beyond a non-calculator paper is part of the assessment process.
